manually create an interface with required mode:
ifconfig wlan0 create wlandev <dev> wlanmode monitor up

If I do this:
ifconfig wlan0 wlanmode monitor
this is the error message:
ifconfig: wlanmode: bad value
wlanmode can be specified only at the creation time;
try to destroy the interface first:
ifconfig wlan0 down
ifconfig wlan0 destroy
and, then:
ifconfig wlan0 create wlandev iwn0 wlanmode monitor up
So I tested it on another laptop:
With this card:
