Não tenho mais o squirrelmail instalado aqui, mas achei este post
sobre o assunto:
Q: I received an e-mail with an attached message, but I have to click a
link to display the link. Can I have Squirrelmail display the image in the
message window instead?
A: Yes, you can. From the Squirrelmail inbox, click on the "Options" link
near the top of the page, then on the "Display Preferences", which should
be the first item in the right-hand column. Scroll down untill you see the
option "Display Attached Images with Message:" and select "Yes". Scroll to
the bottom of the page and click on the "Submit" button. You should now be
able to view the images in the message window.
