Cancel that, the <control>+<return> combination doesn't work in the Chat text box. It "activates the default button while a GtkTextView control has focus.... http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/controls-entry.html For the record, I've tried <control>+<escape> -- it just does the same as <escape> in dialogs. Looking at the old civ1/2 manuals, z, <shift>z, <control>z, and x, <shift>x, <control>x were used to "zoom" the map in and out respectively. I don't know why, but <control><shift>m was used in civ3 to "clean up" the map.... I propose <control>z to zoom to the map.
