Details:
after connection with the gtk client to the server the following errors a
printed (see also http://forum.freeciv.org/viewtopic.php?t=6244):
(freeciv-gtk2:15592): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_label_set_label: assertion `str !=
NULL' failed

I tried to run with --g-fatal-warnings but it results in
#> ./civ --g-fatal-warnings
Unable to find client executable: freeciv
