Greetings,

The holidays have arrived early here in Finland! I just got a
mind-blowing Easter surprise package of 1500 updates - 600 new
translated strings and improvements to existing translations, of
excellent quality. The source was a brand new Freeciv translator, Pekka
Pessi, who is subsequently added to my list of personal heroes (together
with Marko Lindqvist, of course).

I have 4 points of business (on POTFILES.in, fi.po commit, gettext magic
and S2_3 timelines):

#1: Need to update POTFILES.in or something else funky going on?

The base S2_3's freeciv.pot (link below) used in merging these
translations may be slightly different from the general thing generated
from svn - Pekka mentioned he changed his POTFILES.in to include
* server/settings.h and
* modinst/download.h,
which I interpreted as maybe needing attention in the svn version as
well (although it might have been a local issue). Anyway, if those two
are in fact missing from the list of translateable files, they should
probably be added.

The resulting template file has 6292 strings in total. According to
Daniel's statistics, beta4's 100% translations had 6360 (i.e. 68 strings
more). Maybe there's something further that's missing from our
POTFILES.in?

#2: Update of fi.po to S2_3 and TRUNK.

Could someone push this update to fi.po into S2_3 and TRUNK, with
appropriate re-merges to freeciv.pots if needed? TRUNK hasn't been
independently updated since the S2_3 branch, so this translation can
safely overwrite the old.

The (outgoing/pre-remerge) statistics for the file are:
4875 translated messages, 878 fuzzy translations, 539 untranslated
messages.

That's 6292 in total, and an improvement of 1105 translated strings from
beta4 statistics. I hereby challenge other numerous sub-5000
translations to beat their next thousand line before the stable release!
I'll grab my Wikipedia and assault the 200ish new nationality texts,
that should do the trick. ;)

#3: You have learned new skill: STRING ELIMINATION.

For the rest of us who didn't know this before: %1$.0s prints the first
%s-string in the message as 0-length, i.e. eliminates it from the
translation in a hygienic way that does not make msgfmt -c barf.

This can sometimes be useful when restructuring difficult sentences
containing redundant data (like "The Polish x of the Poles", or even
some singular translations such as "%d gold" - just remember to replace
the 's' with 'd' in the latter case). The possibilities are endless!

#4: Any updates on timelines?

Will there be a beta5, or is the next one the real thing already? Any
deadlines planned? Easter vacation is coming up in a week, and will
hopefully prove productive for me. ;) Sorry if this was up somewhere
already, I tried to search my inbox and the wiki but couldn't find
anything on the post-beta4 scheduling.

Best regards,

--Sini, briefly procrastinating from finishing a thesis
