you don't have to break compatibility to enhance DOS.

going the DRDOS (much enhanced EMM386) way or Microsoft (Windows 3.11
enhanced mode, Win95) way, both companies *really* enhanced the
operating system without breaking compatibility.

in Win95 you could have multiple DOS boxes (which I used heavily - it
was the best DOS evr at this time), but still have direct hardware
access. even Wordstar 1.0 would run ;)

unfortunately, while it would be possible to have a better DOS (IMHO
Win95 was a better DOS), our only left active developer is busy
developing EDLIN ;)

Michael Devore has probably spend something like a half year of his
life to bring EMM386 (toms edition) to EMM386 (mostly working DPMI
host).
now estimate the amount of work needed to enhance DOS to anything
multi-something, graphical, ...

all this work for some 20+ users ? simply not going to happen.
