Try F8 (single stepping) through your config, and disable any EMM386 or JEMMEX. What exact partition i.d. is your FAT? Perhaps it needs to be LBA aware (0xC)? I don't remember offhand. BTW, "Grub2" and "1.9.7" sounds wrong. I assume this means you're (only) using GRUB classic.
