I know, but beeping isn't what I'd call essential behavior, so if it's
causing problems, at minimum we should be able to disable it.

How? The naive "echo ^G"? There is probably no perfect way to beep.
Heck, I remember you warning that not all motherboards come with
buzzers anymore. Perhaps a "visual bell" would be better?
