Hi Eric,

I don’t think that is the case.

When you (or it automatically) selects the OS type, it should make all of the
necessary changes.

I did go thought the settings trying a bunch of non-default items. Nothing made
a difference for those programs causing it to terminate the machine.

The default settings work fine on my older Dual Core i5 MacBook Pro running
macOS 10.13.6 and is limited to VirtualBox 6.1.42. No problem with those
programs in FreeDOS.

So, I tried the following on the 8-Core Trash Can MacPro running Monterey
(macOS 12.7.6)...

Removed VirtualBox 7.1.2, Installed VirtualBox 7.0.20. Recreated FreeDOS
virtual machine with default VM settings. Same problems with DOS programs
mentioned.

Removed VirtualBox 7.0.20, Installed VirtualBox 6.1.50 (no longer supported by
Oracle). Rebooted machine for kernel extension installation. Recreated FreeDOS
virtual machine with default VM settings. No problem with any of those
programs.

Removed 6.1.50, Installed 7.1.2, Rebooted. Ran existing FreeDOS VM. Problems
recurred.

Rolled back to 6.1.50. Rebooted again for kernel extension. Ran existing
FreeDOS VM. No problems.

Therefore, I don’t think it has anything to do with the settings in VirtualBox.
But, it is possible that there are settings not in the user interface (only in
config files) that could be causing a problem. But, when selecting the machine
as DOS, it should make those changes automatically.

6.1.x installs a kernel extension, 7.x does not seem to do that. Possibly that
is the problem under a DOS client. Interestingly, the Virtual Display is
noticeably slower when using 7.x.

It is also possible that there is some sort of compatibility (or setting)
causing issues with this version of macOS or even the model of CPU.

I wonder if anyone running a newer version of macOS is experiencing the same
problem with VirtualBox 7.x.

For now, I just rolled back to VirtualBox 6.x.

:-)

Jerome
