Hi all,
I did a few quick tests with RC2 on VMware Workstation, and the results
are mixed.
RC1 had the problem that the installation under VMware did not succeed
because after the disk was partitioned and the VM was rebooted, the
installation did not continue. This is fixed in RC2 by an updated FDISK,
which installs a MBR IPL capable of handing back to BIOS via INT 18 if
no active partition is found or the VBR does not have a BIOS signature.
The default boot order of VMware is fixed disks -> CD. This in
connection with the old loader not capable of instructing the BIOS to
try the next device caused the trouble.
An installed FreeDOS RC2 however hangs after boot with a "out of memory"
error if JEMMEX is loaded. The message seems to be printed by FreeCOM
0.86. If I replace FreeCOM 0.86 with FreeCOM 0.85a, the system boots. So
my initial guess is that FreeCOM 0.86 has problems running when XMS is
present. Can anyone confirm this behaviour?

I will not be updating the FreeDOS 1.4 “download/update repositories”
with the updated versions of the packages that are available in RC2.
At least, I will not be updating those today.
Although I am finally starting to feel a little better, I have been
ill for the past few weeks. I simply do not have the energy needed to
go through the tedious process of updating those downloadable versions
of the updated packages at present. Perhaps I will get to those in a
few days.
