      This depends on manufacturer - sometime more, sometime less. There even
exists classification like "softmodem" and "winmodem".

      This depends. Sometime, modem omits only some high level protocols
(like v.42, as in first softmodems on Rockwell chipsets, which require to
load v42.drv driver), sometime there is onlt ADC/DAC, and all other UART
functionality imitated by (software) driver (usually, for Windows).
