Eric, Thanks. I finally got it working. I don't think its a freedos problem. the laptop is a LIfebook 770tx with hotswapping cdrom/floppy that is built into the bios. I think its confused with the drive mounting
What I ended up doing is using GParted to partition. I booted with the CD, and quit the installation program. FreeDos's fdisk to format. Note I tried format c: /S says that kernal.sys was not found. So I typed sys C: and that worked. What I can't remember is where I ran sys c: from. A: which had the cd contents on it or X: which had the "boot floppy" contents on it. I would have expected them to be reversed. I am not sure since I occcasionally get different drive assignments on different boots. After testing by rebooting to an empty system I rebooted with the cdrom and did an install over the top of that. Everything seems to be working fine. :) I am stubborn. I think it was the laptop + the way the install was written and not so much freedos itself. Since I had the same problem when I installed MSDOS 6.22 (tried that after freedos failed I didn't get the F 99 s with DOS I got a blank screen and a blinking cursor. I have problems with booting linux on it too, anything derived from deb fails. only Slackware and derivatives seem to work as well as DSL have not tried to install them though just the Live CD The only thing left is that FreeDos does not use the full screen, there is almost a two inch border around the displayable area. all other OS seem to use the whole screen. There is an option in the BIOS to stretch it but that turns out ugly. Is there a dos way to increase the screen.
