DOS doesn't not support any serial port, beside that it has the COMx: 
devices, which work by the ports as defined in the BIOS data segment

Certainly not a DOS issue, even BIOS know about RS-232 at best. 
RS-485 or RS-422 is completely application dependent, DOS knows 
nothing about those...
