 While he has more DOS experience than me, AFAIR UMBs
 were memory blocks between 640Kb and 1Mb, part of the
 real mode address space and could be used in any PC,
 as long as physical RAM did exist there .
 They were not in DOS user space, so were not 
 allocated to "normal" user programs, but did not
 have any other restrictions.
 Many expanded memory managers map RAM above 1Mb to
 UMBs when physical UMBs are unavailable.
