Hi Dan,

hmm, the result in 0.8.0 seems to be that every ID is stored:

<map version="0.8.0">
<!-- To view this file, download free mind mapping software FreeMind
from http://freemind.sourceforge.net -->
<node CREATED="1197755221144" ID="Freemind_Link_490224317"
MODIFIED="1197755221144" TEXT="Neue Mindmap">
<node CREATED="1197755222859" ID="_" MODIFIED="1197755223343"
POSITION="right" TEXT="a"/>
<node CREATED="1197755223773" ID="Freemind_Link_572847104"
MODIFIED="1197755224147" POSITION="right" TEXT="b">
<node CREATED="1197755225047" ID="Freemind_Link_1995158048"
MODIFIED="1197755225483" TEXT="c"/>
<node CREATED="1197755225925" ID="Freemind_Link_1167308277"
MODIFIED="1197755226292" TEXT="d">
<node CREATED="1197755227509" ID="Freemind_Link_1596789363"
MODIFIED="1197755228170" TEXT="e"/>
</node>
</node>
</node>
</map>

And this hasn't been changed.

You are right, that it is not excellent to store them, but let me reply
that it is really difficult to see whether or not a nodes id may be
omitted in storing the file. In FreeMind itself we do need the ids to
handle undo, too, so internally they are widely used.

I don't think, that we should change the behaviour at this release,
should we?
