(I'm sending this to chat and dev to make sure everyone hears this)
When I first read about MediaEnforcer, I thought they used
a fairly obvious hole that no one had gotten around to fixing
yet (quite trivialy, too. Just modify the decrement of htl). Thus,
copyright.net only served to make Freenet stronger. Apparently,
this thought was not shared by all, or there would be no disscusion
about clusters.
Since I don't think clusters are at all useful, and the most of the core
Freenet developers don't either, I'm going to ignore them
for this e-mail. So, whats the next step?
After modifying the htl behavior, the only way for MediaEnforcer
to gather lists of nodes that have 'bad' content involves entrapment.
However, many ISPs won't care; the legal letter they received
is enough and will probably not bother to listen to the user's
counter-argument.
On the other hand, They are on risky ground if it is ever brought
to court.
Therefore, it should be obvious that, in this case, the solution
is legal, not technical. This is opposed to the DeCSS case where
the solution was to mirror like mad and let the court battle run
its course.
So, I propose that we work on getting to the point where we can
push a class-action suit on MediaEnforcer. MediaEnforcer
is not yet totaly online, so we have a little time before the witch-hunt
begins. We must set up a seperate mailing list for those whom
have had their connections cut for running nodes (and by MediaEnforcer
in particular). Node runners should download a free-ISP software
(unfortunatly, such software tends to be Windows-only) or use
a publicly-accsessable computer to tell of their plight quickly.
They should also send their snail-mail address to a maintainer
so that they can be easily contacted later.
As a final note, this stuff must be sent to Slashdot and Kuro5hin
for the karma whores and trolls to look over :)
