Hello,

I am running FreeBSD servers (Version 4.2) and an Ascend MAX-HP 4048
Terminal Server. With the FreeBSD came a copy of Ascend Radius version
98XXXX. After several frustrating days with the older Ascend Radius, I
downloaded FreeRadius (Tuesday - November 27th - Current Version).

I installed the FreeRadius as per the instructions in the accompanying
files. Now it appears to be successfully installed on my server. When I run
/usr/local/sbin/check-radiusd-config, I get all happy messages.

The old Ascend radius used some proprietory attributes so it appears
that for the MAX to use the new dictionary file with VSA attributes, the
accounting code settings in the MAX had to be switched from OLD to VSA. I
also included the dictionary.ascend with the main dictionary file for the
radiusd.

The /etc/services ports are 1812/1813 on the FreeBSD server and in the
MAX. I have the hostnames set, DNS is working properly and I am nearly ready
to try some telephone dial-ins to the MAX. I have already tested the MAX for
modem access with local user connection profiles and it works properly.
Here's my trouble:

When I start the radius server /usr/local/sbin/radiusd -X it fires up,
outputs some healthy looking processing information to the console and then
delivers several of these lines:

Ignoring request from client *:1812 with unknown code 33

My first thoughts were that the code 33 referred to radius proxy
configuration issues. I edited the radiusd.conf file to make sure that the
radius server did not proxy radius requests but processed them at the local
level (the radius server and the authentication server are the same box). I
also checked the proxy file to insure compliance with the localhost issues.

In reading through the archives and searching the web, the only real
thing I found shedding a clue on this issue was at Lucent's NaviRadius site
: http://www.lucentradius.com/technotes/3002.html

I think my problem may be related to the above Lucent issue but when I went
to my Max to check it out, the Lucent menu items did not seem to apply. I am
running MAX software version 7.0.4. Anyhow, I am stuck and am wondering if
anyone has some insight for me. I apologize for being so wordy, but I wanted
to make sure that you had pertinent details on what I have done far. Thank
you for listening.

Respectfully,

Clint Bridges
