How about either a wiki or FaqOMatic then? OpenLDAP, besides their
reference manual, and short howto style intro, uses FaqOMatic. CMU -
Cyrus IMAP - uses a wiki. Other projects use similar systems as well,
but both of these, IMHO, operate in relatively strict manner compared to
other OSS projects.

Neither would be a replacement for good documentation, but compared to
mail archives, either would be much easier to search, browse, index.
