I think you're talking about two separate issues. The server doesn't crash if the "configure" process fails. It doesn't get *built* if the "configure" process fails. Also, many other people have tried -pre1 && -pre2, and don't report those problems. So... are you willing to say what options you're passing to "configure", what version of OpenSSL you have, where it is, and what happens during the "configure" process?
