As suggested (Alan Dekok, I think), I hid libsasl from rlm_ldap while building freeradius.
However, rather than move the sasl libraries about, I commented out anyting in src/modules/rlm_ldap/configure and configure.in that would add sasl to the Makefile.
I haven't yet hit the TLS issue (thanks for the warning), but I wanted to offer my workaround for the libsasl issue, since folks may consider it easy.
