I read the FAQa and HOWTOs but their are either unavailable or do not give me the clue - all I want is to have certificates for my users to authenticate.

I successfully set up radius-based authentication with mysql database

accomplish user authentication.

EAP-TLS? PEAP? What kind of authentication?

I tried with eap but can not get it work.

See the FAQ for "it doesn't work".

I looked for the howto on the Internet but nowhere find a
solution?

http://deployingradius.com/

Read the HOWTO's at the bottom of the main web page.

Is it possible just to use certs or do they have to be
incorporated in some authentication mechanism, if they do what is the
best ( easiest) one to set up with cisco router 2800? - any help
appreciated

freeradius 1.1.3

  Upgrade to 2.0.5.
