I've only vaugely been following this thread (no pun intended). It just
occurred to me I may know what's going on. You're only seeing the
degredation when exec'ing an external perl module correct?
We had a bug in our perl interpreter which caused it to start very
slowly. I don't recall the exact cause and it's since been fixed in our
distribution, but it's conceivable you're hitting the same issue. You
might want to try googling about slow perl initialization and see if
it's relevant to your issue.
