This doesn't happen for me at all.

I suspect that it's legitimately failing on your system because it
doesn't have shmem support.  I'm beefing up the error checking a bit,
and adding more error reporting.. there were a couple of (probably the
most common) cases where it would detect failure and disable shared
memory pixmaps.

I'll have it committed as soon as I verify it's all good.
