Hi! I posted this to the message board too but I
figured I should post it here too just in case..so
here goes:

Hi, I ran this idea by #FreeSCI on OPN and received
positive feedback so I'm throwing this out to everyone
and seeing what they think! I recently was looking for
a suitable graphical multiuser RPG that was
opensourced (I wanted to host my own server) for my
soon-to-be-up Quest For Glory fan page
(http://www.qfg.org, it's just a cover page right now)
I looked through Freshmeat and Sourceforge and
couldn't find a suitable one that was anywhere near
completion. Then it hit me. Why couldn't FreeSCI
itself be expanded to accomodate a multiplayer
experience? I was assured that it wouldn't totally
break the format to accomodate this and it would seem
to me that it would be an extremely beneficial thing
to do for everyone, not just Sierra fans. I really
like the idea of MUD-style interaction via a text
interface. Those were the best of the Quest series in
my opinion anyway! Older players who played these
games as well as MUDders would be drawn to it by
nostalgia, if nothing else. People who don't have
state of the art hardware or just plain don't like
Ultima Online and Everquest styled games would be
drawn to it because of the low hardware requirements.
Others would be drawn to it as a chat community. I
have noticed a lack of good graphical chat systems
lately, barring Project Elysium which seems to show a
lot of promise. My understanding of this would be that
the world can be controlled almost completely by the
world designer, since SCI was used to make standalone
games originally. Before anybody says anything, I
don't believe cheating would be much of an issue as we
could double check input from the client to the
server. In any case, my point is that it would appeal
to a lot more people than you think. Now, I will be
the first person to admit that I know nothing about
this area, but I would be interested in helping
organize such an effort and I would do whatever I
could to help. Please let me know if anyone is
interested in this!
