Minor changes to the SHMEM code:
1)  Slightly stricter error-trapping
2)  Syncs the XServer on failure, after killing the shmem segments.

I hope this will reduce the number of erros you get when shmem fails.
we still need to add an explicit config option to disable shmem usage.
