If you're not already aware, the recent Red Hat and Mandrake distros both
shipped with development versions of GCC, rather than a stable, released
version. The latest released version is GCC 3.0, and I think you need an
up-to-date copy of binutils as well to use it.

Of course, whether a newer compiler version fixes the problem is another
question...!
