Have you tried turning off the PCM driver with the -Pnull command-line
switch?

Apart from that, it would help if you could narrow down the dates in the CVS
dev tree rather than releases since a lot of CVS commits to the sound code
were occurring at around that time. So you are sure that sound was working
in CVS on Jan 7 - on what date would you say it had stopped working? Jan 10?
Jan 14?

(Believe me, I would do this bug-hunting for you if I could reproduce the
problem! ;-) )
