Hrm. I know this sounds pathetic, but I'd need access to a slow but
reliable box with a local display to test that; lacking this, I don't feel
qualified to do any profiling.

Could you please try FreeSCI on the O2 again with the "--without-sound"
configure flag? This should completely disable the sound subsystem
(including any communication to it, i.e. some cues will be lost, which
will cause problems; most well-known are the ones in SQ3 and in the HQ1
char selection screen.

OK. If no one else has any time to look into this, I'll try to see if I
can get my hands on a box for testing on friday or saturday.
