I did! 
it all went well until installing it... I couldn't do the
setenv FREESURFER_HOME /usr/local/freesurfer

so I though I needed the license... and got stuck and still stuck... :)

Now that I am looking at the other folders, I see that some else had already 
installed freesurfer in the "downloads folder"... that might be causing 
trouble. The freesurfer folder there has a lock on it... I can't trash or move 
it, maybe I should uninstall everything and start over? How do I uninstall free 
surfer?

How did FS get there in the first place? If you installed it, then you
must have permission. If you did not, find who did and have him/her copy it
