If you run in your shell:
file /usr/local/freeswitch/bin/freeswitch

as Brian suggested it will return something like what I got below:
/usr/local/freeswitch/bin/freeswitch: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64,
version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.8, dynamically linked (uses shared
libs), not stripped


He didn't want you to start freeswitch but instead pass the path of the
binary to the file command which will tell information about most files.
