A child should sound fine through any modern cellular codec. Some of the 
early ones, like the VSELP for IS54, sounded really watery on high 
pitched voices, due to the lack of fractional pitch estimation.

You really want to hear a range of Cantonese voices to see how well 
pitch is handled.
