Using coherent PSK demodulation a 1dB SNR in a 1kHz bandwidth is
possible with Codec 2 at around 1200 bit/s. A friend emailed me
recently:
"NBFM 5k dev needs about 6dB CN in a 15kHz BW to be
listenable ...
so the VHFDV should be about 12dB better."
One way an open standard could compete is to outperform the incumbent
analog and newer digital standards by a wide margin.
