On the subject of data rate, I would consider target usage.
E.g. 1400/1200 for HF where bandwidth is at a premium and more prone to
fade. With different "standard" FEC levels depending on link quality.
2400 for VHF and above where bandwidth is less of an issue, but again a
link quality based FEC is desirable. Even better to make it auto adaptable.
