I would imagine that OpenCL would be the most appropriate approach. This
can be compiled to run on both CPUs and GPUs to take advantage of
parallelism. I've got a vague plan to have a go at that in the future, but
need to do some more learning first.
While the codec is still being developed it is probably too early to look
at fixed point, but there's a handy guide here:
