Rick,
When I first got my Pi the hard floating point unit was not yet being used
and hence codec2 was not practical. Now that the standard distribution uses
the hard fp it works okay. If your embedded device has hard floating point
that the OS can use then you are likely okay. The MIPS won't tell the whole
story.
If the device you are using does not have hardware floating point then
likely you will have to try and use the DSP for some of the tasks (FFT,
etc) or it will not be fast enough.
