The driver problem is someting widely discussed in Open-Source/Linux -
development scene.
Some companies, like Intel and HP are even offering Open-Source Drivers
for their hardware, while some device manufacturers seemed to be
disavowing the existance of linux and prefer to offer drivers for
outdated Mac OS classic instead of Linux Kernel 3.x ...
On one hand, most users just wish to have the hardware work, no matter
if open source drivers or not - but the developers of the LKM [linux
kernel mailinglist] dislike that, as this is counterwise the open-source
principles. In other words: Companis don't want to let the developers
look in their cards (IP and other stuff...) as developers are ordering
to play with open cards. The only one, who's disadvantaged anyway with
the situation, is the user that is spectrating...
You may see it on the ''Winmodems''... This problem made an working 56k
USB modem useless for me, and enforced me to buy a new modem with RS-232
connector and an additional USB adaptor. - just because they cut out
AT-commands... but this is out of topic...
