Did you do any spectral analysis on the audio, there may be some
fan/machine noise which is throwing Codec2 into confusion (even if it's
not readily audible to a human).

I also remember a while ago there was mention of a review of different
digital codecs, and how they were affected by background noise. Especially
wrt emergency responders not being able to hear messages.

Pre-filtering? ie. high-pass
