Allow me to add my 2 cents...
One of the nice things I always liked about the Linux mascot/logo Tux is
the way the logo could be used for more than just being a static image.
If you were less creative you could just paste your sub-project on its
belly, but I have seen very creative usages of Tux as a mascot (and not
just a logo) in various poses, but all of them still screamed 'Linux'.
If it was up to me (and it is not) I would aim for a similar thing: A
recognizable logo and mascot that can be used in creative ways, yet
still clearly signals 'codec2' or 'freedv'. (Imagine the
nowherville-amateur-radio-codec2-enthousiasts club creating their own
derivative and it should still make sense)
