I'm not fully sure re: Field Day but based on the rules and how FreeDV has
traditionally been classified in the past, I'd suspect it's treated the
same as regular SSB voice for scoring purposes.

As for net control, given that band conditions on any particular day can
make it so that a certain NC won't be able to operate or hear many
stations, something like Zoom could work well with a lot fewer people
involved (maybe one or two people to facilitate the conversation versus
needing multiple backup NC stations).
