Your description, as well as the code that was posted, make an
assumption that may very well be wrong. If you store an image
of a red watch under the "red" variation, then that same image
is also associated with the "red" variation of Corvettes, Jordache
G-strings, or any other item/sku. Perhaps the solution is just
not to have those cases or not to display the graphic in those
cases, but technically, you have associated the wrong graphic
with the wrong thing.
Hmm, maybe you can have separate variations for a "red swatch"
and a "red corvette"....
