Here is what I would do:
1. Use Attributes and Variations to add 'Out of print' and 'Available for
download' variations.
2. Use the already existing code and change how it is referenced in html.
Call 'inventory available' 'ships in 1-3 days', call 'inventory reserved'
'ships in 3-5 days' and check 'may be ordered when inventory is zero' to
allow backorders.
