Believe me, the idea of putting FreeTrade on SourceForge is something that's
been discussed off-list for at least a year. It's true, the benefit of
SourceForge is it gets lots of traffic. However, that's also a disadvantage
because it can be slow and your project tends to get lost in the crowd.
There's also some other disadvantages, like you're stuck with whatever
config of Apache they give you. Jon and I like the freedom we have with the
Working-Dogs site.

Micheal is right, the real problem is we need to attract more people to the
project. No one wants FreeTrade to be used more than I do. So, I am open
to ideas. It may be an abuse of SourceForge, but we might be able to simply
register the project and then make all the links point to the W-D site.
FreeTrade is listed on FreshMeat, of course. We're not listed on the
PHP.net site, but I think that's a manpower issue.

I guess this is an appropriate time to talk about our plans for
Working-Dogs. Since we began it, W-D has been hosted at Clear Ink, a Web/Ad
agency where Jon and I worked for a long time. Jon moved on to Collab.Net
early last year, and I left to start percipien last month. Clear Ink has
been very generous by providing both hardware and bandwidth for the W-D
site, but in order to make the lives of the IT staff easier, we're working
on moving the site to another location.

When we do separate W-D from the CI network, it should allow us even more
freedom to give access to the resources on the box. I can envision giving
trusted individuals access to update the site. Putting the site into CVS
might be a good idea, actually. Jon and I will have to work out the
details.

Here's an idea for getting publicity: write an article. Zend.com is always
interested in articles on PHP. Also consider that writing about FreeTrade
(or just a tiny part of it) also benefits the project by creating
documentation. There are other sites that accept articles, too, like
phpbuilder.com, WebMonkey or even CNET.

One big goal we need to strive for is completion of FreeTrade 2. It should
have been finished by now, but I'm mostly working on it alone and I haven't
had much time in the last six months. I should have much more time going
forward, fortunately. What would be great is if we could find someone who's
willing to build a store with what we have so far. If anyone out there is
pitching an ecomm site and thinks it would help to have the maintainer of
the FreeTrade project speak to the client, I can be available. :)
