I do not see this problem with the emboldening in ftview mode 2 even at small sizes, where the embodening strength is a lit gentler. Perhaps the safeguard should be more aggressive and clip emboldening at half or even quarter of stem width. Perhaps, ftview forgets to adjust glyph metrics.
