I have looked at http://opensource.apple.com/source/X11libs/X11libs-60/libpng/libpng-1.5.1/projects/vstudio/libpng/libpng.vcxproj which is a lot simpler. I suspect the complexity was grandfathered a long time ago. I wanted to bring this up so that folks could critically review the situation.
