You can download free versions for development purposes, just not production,
and you won't get patches for the free release.

Solaris 8 (released in 2000) and Solaris 9 (released in 2002) are both dead now
and not really interesting.  Solaris 10 hits the end of its main support life
tomorrow, and then goes into 3 years of extended support before it too dies.

I believe you can get free access to Solaris 11 on SPARC for development via
https://swisdev.oracle.com/ but I've not tried myself, since I have plenty of
access to internal machines at work for that.

And if you just need someone to run a build on Solaris, I can do that too.
