Here is an updated patch that does a better job of setting the stage for a split between grayscale and subpixel. I'm still forcing subpixel in ttinterp.c because there AFAIK there is no way to set this with fontconfig currently.

Also, I am running Fedora 12, and the fontconfig package comes defaulted with these files: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 52 2009-10-29 20:44 57-dejavu-sans.conf -> /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/57-dejavu-sans.conf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 57 2009-10-29 20:44 57-dejavu-sans-mono.conf -> /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/57-dejavu-sans-mono.conf lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 53 2009-10-29 20:44 57-dejavu-serif.conf -> /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/57-dejavu-serif.conf
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1917 2008-08-09 16:24 99-DejaVu-autohinter-only.conf

These were interfering with DejaVu in Firefox and other apps (not ftdiff though). Maybe your setup also has something similar? I can at least get my DejaVu fonts to use the patch now. The v's and w's are a little distorted, but that is a larger issue than just this font I think.

Now onto Palatino....
