Using the `ftview' demo program, I can easily load your font: ftview 33 charR24.pcf.gz As you can see the `24' in the font name refers to the point size, not the pixel size (which FreeType computes as 33ppem). To make that work you need a FreeType library that has both activated PCF and gzip support.
