I remember, a long time ago, back in about the time of Aldus (not yet Adobe) PageMaker, a comment I read somewhere that CJK text rendering is best thought of as happening on a grid of character cells, not in terms of font metrics, fixed-width or otherwise. Not sure if that helps ...
