The channel number is passed in that position, though you can also pass other stuff, like the channel name I think. I don't care too much about it because I've moved to tvtime and it does all that much more easily.
As for the 16:9 thing, the problem is I need to know what resolutions people use; setting -monitoraspect 16:9 isn't enough if I don't know the vertical and horizontal resolutions.
