A couple of thoughts here:

- I've had pretty good results with a single mencoder pass, although I
understand the multi-pass rips are much better at low bit rates.

- It may be easier for the ripper to be its own full-fledged process, which
could of course change working dir as needed. 

I guess I'm not sure what your overall design is, but I would think that you
would just need to be able to start and stop a rip, and to know when it is
over. Maybe you want to be able to get progress indications, too. At worst, you
could define a command-line interface to a ripping process, start it with
popen, and read the progress.
